Giant sequoias are the world's largest single trees by volume. They can grow to be about 3,000 years old, and a few of them are as tall as skyscrapers. These big trees' slow growth is related to the smaller amount of wood they put on each year. However, the general health of the older trees doesn't seem to be in danger, although their crowns are not growing upward as much as they use to when they were younger. In a sense, the older trees are "topheavy" because their crowns aren't making those annual, upward growth points. Instead the crowns are lateral, that is, the tree's highest branches grow straight out to the sides, making the whole crown of the tree much longer than it used to be.
